›› What is translation memory? [UP]
A translation memory (TM) is a linguistic database that continually captures your translations as your work for future use. All previous translations are accumulated within the translation memory (in source and target language pairs called translation units) and reused so that you never have to translate the same sentence twice. The more you build up your translation memory, the faster you can translate subsequent translations, enabling you to take on more projects and increase your revenue.
 
›› What is terminology management? [UP]
Terminology is the foundation of all communication. At its most basic level it is the study and ultimately usage of words or phrases that have a particular meaning, these words or phrases are referred to as terms. Terminology is growing in importance as terms are becoming increasingly adopted by organizations to describe a company, product, service or even a unique selling point.
 
›› What is Computer Assisted Translation (CAT)? [UP]
Computer Assisted Translation is the technology, such as a translation memory or termbase, used to support a human translator to translate files. CAT tools can be used to ensure speed, quality and consistency during the translation process.
 
›› What is automated translation? [UP]
Automated translation and machine translation utilizes machine technology to instantly provide a translation. SDL Trados Studio integrates automated translation and machine translation with translation memory and terminology management, saving considerable costs.
 
›› What are SDL Trados Studio Freelance's system requirements? [UP]
SDL Trados Studio supports Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. As minimum requirements is recommended a Pentium IV-based computer with 1 GB RAM and a screen resolution of 1280x1024. For optimum performance is recommended 2 GB RAM and a more recent Pentium or compatible processor. Please also note that in order to extract and add terminology to SDL MultiTerm Desktop you must be using SDL MultiTerm Extract. Previous versions of SDL MultiTerm Extract will not work with SDL MultiTerm.
 
›› Does SDL Trados Studio Freelance work on an Apple Mac? [UP]

›› How many languages does SDL Trados Studio Freelance handle? [UP]
With SDL Trados Studio, you can work with up to 5 different languages of your choice.
 
›› Why do I require SDL Trados Studio Freelance? [UP]
SDL Trados Studio Freelance is designed to accelerate the translation process, increasing your productivity and revenue. It also has automated quality checks, helping you to ensure your translations are of the highest standard and help you win more business.
 
›› Can I open other CAT Tools translation memories with SDL Trados Studio software? Can I combine translation memories from other CAT Tools and SDL Trados Studio to create a larger translation memory with SDL Trados Studio Professional? [UP]
You can open other CAT Tools' translation memories using SDL Trados software via TMX (Translation Memory Exchange). SDL Trados supports TMX level 1.4b, the latest standard of TMX. In order to combine your other memories and SDL Trados translation memories, you will need to export your translation memories into TMX format and then import them into your new or existing file within SDL Trados Studio.
 
›› How many separate installations does one license allow? [UP]
There are 2 available versions: SDL Trados Studio Freelance and SDL Trados Studio Freelance Plus. You can install SDL Trados Studio Freelance on more than one computer, but you can activate your license on only one PC at any one time. You can also easily return your license and activate another PC through license manager tool as many times as you like. If you would like the convenience of 2 activation codes, SDL Trados Studio Freelance Plus allows 2 activation at the same time.
 
›› How can I find my SDL Trados Studio activation code? [UP]
1). Visit: https://oos.sdl.com/asp/products/ssl/account/default.asp
2). Login to your account
3). Go to "My Licenses"
4). You will see your new SDL Trados Studio 2011 activation code in the "My Product Activation Codes" section.
5). Please copy your Activation Code in to your clipboard (Highlight and select CTRL+C)
 
›› How can I return my activation code in SDL Trados Studio 2011? [UP]
1). In SDL Trados Studio select "Help" -> "Product Activation"
2). Click "Deactivate"
 
›› How can I return my activation code in SDL Trados Studio 2009? [UP]
1). Select Start -> All Programs -> SDL -> SDL Trados Studio 2009 -> License Manager
2). Click "View Activated Licenses"
3). Select the license you wish to return and click "Return License"
4). When the license has been returned select "OK" then select "Close"
 
›› How can I activate my SDL Trados Studio 2011 license on another computer? [UP]
1). If you haven't already downloaded SDL Trados Studio onto the computer, please do so via your account https://oos.sdl.com/asp/products/ssl/account/default.asp
2). Once installed, start the software, select "Help" -> "Product Activation"
3). Enter the activation code
 
›› How can I activate my SDL Trados Studio 2009 license on another computer? [UP]
1). If you haven't already downloaded SDL Trados Studio 2009 onto the computer, please do so via your account https://oos.sdl.com/asp/products/ssl/account/default.asp
2). Select Start -> All Programs -> SDL -> SDL Trados Studio 2009 -> License Manager
3). Click "Activate Online"
4). Enter your new Activation Code and select "Next"
5). Your software is now activated on your computer.
 
›› What are the differences between SDL Trados Studio Freelance and Professional? [UP]
SDL Trados Studio is available in two different versions, Freelance and Professional. The reason behind this is because freelance translators do not usually require all the functionality within the full professional license - and this is reflected in the price of the software. Please visit SDL Trados Studio Professional page where you will find a tab that highlights the differences.
 
›› What kind of benefit am I likely to receive from TTMEM's translation memories? [UP]
SDL Trados offers a feature that is generally known as a "concordance search," i.e., the ability to search for a particular term or phrase within the translation segment. In this way you can access the translation units of an external database.
 
›› Can I resell the translation memories? [UP]
No. It is not permitted to resell the translation memories in any form.
 
›› Can I merge the purchased translation memories with the translation memories I already own? [UP]
Yes, you can. There are no limits to what you can do with this data as long as you don't resell it.
 
›› What language combinations do you focus on? [UP]
We focus on any language combination.
 
›› What industries do you focus on? [UP]
We focus on any industry.
 
›› Can I create those translation memories myself? [UP]
Yes, you can. However, it is tedious and time-consuming task.
 
›› Isn't the content of the translation memories copyrighted? [UP]
The documents that form the translation memories may be copyrighted, but the TMs themselves are not. The TMs are not copyrighted because it is not possible to use them to recreate the original texts.
 
›› What translation memory format will I receive after downloading one of your TMs? [UP]
You will receive Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) format.
 
›› Can I import TMX file into other translation memory tools? [UP]
Yes you can. Thanks to TMX eXchange format you can import the translation memory into main translation memory tools: Across, Catalyst, Déjà Vu X, Heartsome, Lingotek, MemoQ, MultiTrans, Open Language, Tools XLIFF Translation Editor, Olifant, OmegaT, Rainbow, SDLX, Similis, Star Transit, Trados, Wordfast.
 
›› What is alignment? [UP]
It is a process that helps you to re-use valuable translation material from previous projects by allowing you to create a translation memory from your existing translations.
